Barbara Checkryn-Rivers’ Artist Statement

They say, “one picture is worth a thousand words”, as for me, “one picture is worth a thousand moments in time”.  It is that fraction of a second, when the sunlight hits the moss at just the right time, and it takes on a new life with colors that I have not witnessed before.  It is this act in nature that causes me to be humbled by my surroundings and in total awe of what I am viewing.  As an artist, this is my moment in time that I want to create in my paintings, a freeze-dried fraction of a second.

Since moving to the Eagle Hill area of Alberta, I have traveled from the Rockies surrounding Jasper to southern Alberta, and have captured either with paint, or a camera, the many moments that I have experienced.  To me, there is nothing like going to an area of Alberta that I haven’t been to and finding inspiration; at times there is so much to say, that one little painting can’t hold it all.  Whether I start the piece outdoors, or develop it in my studio in Eagle Hill, my paintings reflect an eclectic collection of frozen in time moments.  I enjoy using a variety of colors and combinations that are based more on the value of the shapes that I see, than on the local color.  I am finding myself moving more and more in the direction of using the interplay of nature’s forms in an abstract manner.  My medium of choice is generally acrylics as they offer me a variety of techniques to play on the canvas.  So if you were to ask me how long it took to do a painting, I would say, “a fraction of a second”.

Betty Caskey’s Artist’s Statement

I live to create.  For the last 35 years, fiber, paper, dyes, paints, ribbon, and fabric (especially silk) has presented inspirational challenges to me.  The satisfaction gained from manipulating this media is rivalled only by the joy I feel when I share this passion with others.  Colour and texture are the most important ingredients in my work.
